چکیده

Introduction Beta-blockade therapy during sepsis has a sound rationale in view of its cardiac, metabolic, inflammatory and other effects [1]. Whether it is safe and efficacious in both good prognosis and poor prognosis patients is yet to be ascertained. We have developed a 72-h fluid-resuscitated rat model of faecal peritonitis, where prognosis can be accurately predicted as early as 6 h post-insult based on the degree of myocardial depression (low stroke volume, high heart rate)[2]. This model offers a useful means of testing safety and efficacy.

Acute haemodynamic effects of dobutamine in experimental sepsis-induced myocardial depression.

Introduction Septic patients with myocardial depression are routinely treated with dobutamine [1]. Whether this strategy is desirable is questionable, as catecholamines increase cardiac work, reduce myocardial efficiency, and are cardiotoxic [2]. We can accurately predict mortality in a 72-hour fluid-resuscitated rat model of faecal peritonitis as early as 6 hours, based on the degree of myocar...

Tissue and plasma putrescine levels in non-survivors of sepsis in a fluid-resuscitated rat model of faecal peritonitis

Introduction The polyamine, putrescine, was first isolated from putrefying meat but is thought to play an important role in cell growth and differentiation ([1]). It also generates succinate via GABA and can thus serve as an energy source to the small intestine ([2]). Elevated plasma putrescine levels have been reported in an endotoxic rodent model ([3]). We have previously characterized a 72 h...

Prognostic Validity of Red Cell Distribution Width in Neonatal Sepsis

Background Neonatal sepsis is one of the most critical illness in neonates that is responsible for a great proportion of morbidity and mortality in neonates so early diagnosis and identification of high risk cases is a challenging aim of our study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of red cell distribution width (RDW), in neonatal sepsis at the time of admission ...

Cerebrospinal Fluid Indices in Acute Drug Intoxication Do they Predict the Patients’ Outcome?

Introduction: In some intoxicated patients, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is examined due to the prolonged loss of consciousness, focal neurologic findings, and fever of unknown origin. We aimed to evaluate the probable relationship between the different toxicity causes and the CSF indices in poisoned patients and determine if they could predict the patients’ outcome. Methods: All patients who h...

Humoral immunity state in survivors of pediatric acute lympho-blastic leukemia

Background and Objective: Since there are very few studies on the immunodeficiency state of the Iranian survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), we conducted this study to determine the prevalence of humoral defects in children with ALL at least one year after completion of chemotherapy. Methods: In this study, antibody titers for mumps, rubeola, rubella, tetanus and diphth...
